Flood Insurance

Spring is a time for extra moisture; whether it's a late season snowstorm or your typical spring shower, the month of April usually brings consistent storms. For many homeowners, an increase in moisture can cause water issues in their home, including flooding.

Many homeowners are not aware the flooding is not a covered cause of loss on a homeowner's insurance policy. Flood insurance is a policy that must be purchased separately to insure your home and your personal property against flooding.

According to the Colorado Department of Insurance, "About 25% of all flood insurance claims come from outside of high risk areas". This is an important statistic to keep in mind as it shows that just because your home isn't in a flood zone, doesn't mean you won't experience flooding.

It's also important to understand the difference between flood damage and water damage. The simple answer is water damage is done to your house before the water has hit the ground. Flood damage is done to your house after the water has hit the ground.

Luckily most flood insurance policies are less expensive than most homeowner's anticipate and there are several policy options available to fit the needs of the client.

Tips to Avoid Distracted Driving

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Here are some tips to stay safe on the road:

  1. Limit Use of Cell Phones: save cell phone use for emergencies only or limit use to phone calls through your car's handsfree system. Never text, email, play games, or scroll social media while driving.
  2. Make Adjustments to Your Car Before Driving: adjust your seat and mirrors, set up your Bluetooth music, and get your destination address into your GPS before you start driving. This will help you focus on the road and not what is going on inside the car.
  3. Secure Your Belongings: make sure that your belongings are securely stored or placed somewhere safe so you aren't tempted to reach for them if they fall on the floor or roll under a seat.
